Fishing forecast for Buffalo, NY

Buffalo sits at the point where Lake Erie empties into the Niagara River, and the entire outflow of the upper lake passes the city in a channel a few hundred meters wide. The current in the upper Niagara is severe, the water is clear, and the smallmouth bass fishery it supports is among the best documented in North America.

When these windows are not the right tool

Solunar theory is John Alden Knight's 1926 prediction; the ±60 and ±30 minute widths are convention, not calculation. The times are computed astronomy, the claim that fish feed inside them is not. The day rating follows moon phase — identical nationwide, so every city shows it the same. A moving front beats the moon: apps that read pressure.

Where to fish in Buffalo

This page is built around Lake Erie, with Niagara River in reach — fresh water, about 10 minutes from the middle of Buffalo.

The Niagara River carries the outflow of four Great Lakes through a narrow channel. Current speed in the upper river is high enough that drifting is the standard technique and anchoring is often impractical.

Steelhead run into the tributaries in autumn and again in spring, and those two windows are the local trophy fishery. In between, the fish are in the lake and out of reach from shore.

Access to the upper river is from a handful of launches and a long stretch of public wall in the city itself. Wading is not an option in current this strong.

Bird Island Pier runs about two miles upstream from Unity Island and under the Peace Bridge, walling off the sheltered Black Rock Channel from the open river. Walk out from Broderick Park and you can fish full Niagara current on one side and slack water a few steps away on the other, without a boat.

The gorge below the falls carries only part of the river. The 1950 treaty guarantees the falls 100,000 cubic feet per second during daytime hours from April into late October and half that at night and in winter; the rest travels in conduits and rejoins below the whirlpool at the Lewiston and Queenston plants.

The nearest grids we publish are Detroit, MI (347 km, Detroit River) and Chicago, IL (727 km, Lake Michigan). Different water, and different minutes.

The lower river below the falls is a gorge with deep, fast, cold water. It fishes for steelhead and lake trout in the cold months and is a completely different fishery from the upper river above the falls, five miles away.

Erie freezes over in most winters, unlike the deeper lakes. Ice fishing happens on the bays and near shore, and lake-effect snow off the water is heavy enough to shut the city down for days at a time.

Muskellunge in the Niagara are a native population rather than a stocked one, and the river is one of the few places on this list where that is true of the apex predator.

Emerald shiners are the forage almost everything here eats, and where they stack along the city shoreline decides where the predators sit. The current past the Freedom Park seawall runs faster than a shiner can swim, so the Army Corps bolted concrete baffles along roughly 700 feet of it to open a slow lane back upstream.

The eastern basin is the deep end of Erie, bottoming near 210 feet, and holds the only real cold-water habitat in the lake — which is why lake trout belong to this end and not the western one. New York confirmed wild lake trout fry in 2021, the first documented natural reproduction in Erie in over sixty years.

Water temperature and season in Buffalo

Air here swings 46.2 °F across the year, from 25.5 °F in January to 71.7 °F in July, and December–February average below freezing. No gauge measures water temperature here, so the table below is air only.

Monthly climate for Buffalo, NY. The air column is the NOAA NCEI climate normal for 1991–2020 — the thirty-year average of a calendar month, not the weather of any one year — measured at BUFFALO, NY US (USW00014733), 13.4 km from the middle of town, with 27–29 of the thirty years behind each month. No NOAA gauge measures water temperature here, so this table is air only. Water lags air by weeks and the lag grows with depth — a deep reservoir turns later than a shallow bay — so air is never a stand-in for a thermometer in the water. Read into this site on .

Nothing in the table is a water temperature; Erie sets that here, and it lags. The air shows it — October averages six degrees above April, the widest gap on this site, though April stands under the higher sun. The lake banks heat through autumn and holds cold into spring, which is why DEC's steelhead run builds as creek temperatures fall from October, and why May fishes colder than it reads.

Lake Erie is the shallowest Great Lake and warms fastest, which makes it the most productive of the five and also the most prone to summer algal blooms in its western basin.

The smallmouth here average larger than in most of their range, and the fishery is managed with that in mind. Autumn, when the fish move deep and feed hard, produces the biggest ones.

Lake-effect snow off Erie comes from the same shallow warm lake that makes the fishing good: as long as the lake is open it feeds the bands, and once it freezes over the snow stops and the ice fishing starts. That single flip, usually in January, splits the local year in two.

Buffalo sits nearly four degrees west of the meridian that sets Eastern clock time, so the clock here runs behind the sun. At the June solstice sunset falls just before nine in the evening, close to half an hour later than New York City on the same clock; in December sunrise comes after 7:40 a.m.

Since 1964 a boom of steel pontoons has been strung across the lake outlet each winter to help a natural ice arch form and keep drifting ice out of the river; it goes in when the water reaches 39°F and is due out by April 1, later if eastern Erie is still carrying heavy ice.

License and seasons in New York

Rules for New York come from the New York agency, and the calculation behind the table is set out in how we compute these times.

Common questions

When is the best time of day to fish in Buffalo?
Take the major period closest to first or last light: 4 of 31 majors in the 16-day table overlap twilight here. Which species that hour is worth spending on changes through the year — smallmouth bass peaks in June–July, September–October, walleye peaks in June–August, steelhead peaks in March–April, October–November.
Why do the windows in Buffalo move so much day to day?
They follow the moon, not the clock. It crosses the meridian over Buffalo, NY about 48 minutes later each day, so a dawn major is a mid-morning one within a week.
Do I need a license to fish in Buffalo?
Assume yes and check first. New York sets licenses, seasons and limits, and they change by year and by water. We link to the agency rather than copy it: a copied rule goes stale quietly, and the person holding the rod pays for it.
