When these windows are not the right tool
Solunar theory is John Alden Knight's 1926 prediction; the ±60 and ±30 minute widths are convention, not calculation. The times are computed astronomy, the claim that fish feed inside them is not. Where to fish in Charleston
This page is built around Charleston Harbor, with Cooper River in reach — both salt and fresh water, about 10 minutes from the middle of Charleston.
The tidal range in Charleston Harbor is several times that of the Gulf coast cities in this grid. Flooded marsh grass at high water becomes dry ground at low water, and the fish move with it every cycle.
Oyster beds are the primary hard structure in this estuary, and they are sharp enough to be a hazard to boats and to waders. Local navigation is as much about reading exposed shell at low water as about depth.
The harbor is fed by the Ashley, the Cooper and the Wando, and the jetties at its mouth are among the oldest coastal engineering works still in use in the country. They concentrate everything moving in or out.
The Cooper River is fresh by engineering rather than by geography: the Santee Cooper project of 1942 sent the Santee River down it, and harbor maintenance dredging jumped from roughly 180,000 cubic yards a year to ten million. A rediversion canal finished in 1985 put about eighty percent of that water back into the Santee, which is why the harbor is salt again.
This is a working container port, dredged to fifty-two feet in 2022 and the deepest on the East Coast. Ships take the whole channel past Fort Sumter and out through the jetties, and the inner ends of those jetties sit below the surface at high water — rock you cannot see, where everyone wants to fish.
This harbor ebbs harder than it floods. NOAA's current predictions put the falling water at roughly twice the speed of the rising through the main channel — about a knot in and better than two out, off the Battery and up Horse Reach alike. Six hours of water spread thin over the marsh comes back through one channel.

Red drum push into the flooded spartina on the biggest high tides to feed on fiddler crabs, tailing with their backs out of the water. Those tides happen only around the new and full moon, which is a genuine lunar effect independent of the solunar theory.
Sheepshead concentrate on the harbor structure and the jetties in the coldest months, giving this city a winter target when the trout bite slows down.
Southern flounder here move seaward through the passes in autumn and the fishery follows them. Their numbers along the whole southeastern coast have declined enough that the rules have tightened in recent years.
The striped bass in the Cooper belong to the Santee Cooper stock, cut off from the sea when the lakes filled in the early 1940s — the first landlocked striped bass population anyone had documented. Hatchery fish descended from them were used to start reservoir striper fisheries across the country.
Tarpon are a high-summer fish here rather than a spring one. They show as the water climbs past the low seventies and leave when it drops back through, which makes July to September the dependable part of the run — a different calendar from the Florida cities on this list.
The boundary between salt and fresh is not a fixed place. The estuary runs twenty-two to twenty-eight miles up the Cooper, and the salinity lines slide four to seven miles between high water and low. Fish sort along that gradient, so a bend can hold blue catfish on one stage and drum on another.

Air and water do not share a calendar here, and the months carry that spread unevenly: the widest gap falls in October and November, the narrowest in March. The harbor is still giving back summer when the first cool mornings arrive. SCDNR times the adult red drum move offshore to that decline, so the inshore run ends on water, not on weather.

The Cooper River above the harbor is fresh and holds a large blue catfish population introduced decades ago. A salt harbor and a big-river catfish fishery within twenty minutes of each other is unusual.
Autumn is the best inshore window: the marsh water clears as summer runoff ends, redfish school, and flounder move seaward past the jetties in a concentrated few weeks.
The Lowcountry summer is long and humid, and by August the shallow creeks warm enough to push fish onto the deeper edges through the middle of the day. A tide that would be perfect in April can be dead water at two in the afternoon four months later.
The Pinopolis lock is the only passage between the Cooper River tailrace and Lake Moultrie, it raises or lowers a boat seventy-five feet, and it stops running about half an hour before sunset. Sunset here swings from roughly 5:15 p.m. at the winter solstice to 8:30 p.m. at the summer one, so the deadline on that trip moves more than three hours across the year.
Daylight runs from about ten hours at the winter solstice to a little over fourteen at the summer one, and the short end is the one that matters. In a cold snap the shallow tidal creeks fall below the harbor itself, and spotted seatrout are injured or killed by water held under about 48 degrees; SCDNR logged kills across this estuary in the winters of 2000-01, 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Sea level itself has a season here: NOAA's average at the Charleston gauge stands about ten inches higher in October than in January. The grass only floods on the top of the tide, so the same lunar high that gets well back into the marsh in autumn can stop short of it in midwinter.
