Fishing forecast for Nashville, TN

Nashville fishes a set of Cumberland River impoundments — Percy Priest to the east, Old Hickory upstream — built and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These are flood-control reservoirs first, which means their levels are drawn down and refilled on a published seasonal schedule that reshapes the shoreline twice a year.

When these windows are not the right tool

Solunar theory is John Alden Knight's 1926 prediction; the ±60 and ±30 minute widths are convention, not calculation. The times are computed astronomy, the claim that fish feed inside them is not. The day rating follows moon phase — identical nationwide, so every city shows it the same. A moving front beats the moon: apps that read pressure.

Where to fish in Nashville

This page is built around J. Percy Priest, with Old Hickory and Cumberland in reach — fresh water, about 20 minutes from the middle of Nashville.

J. Percy Priest and Old Hickory are Corps of Engineers projects on the Cumberland system, not TVA lakes — a distinction that matters locally because the two agencies operate on different rules and publish different schedules.

The Cumberland below Old Hickory runs cool from the dam release and fishes differently from either impoundment. Generation schedules decide whether the tailwater is a wading fishery or an unfishable torrent that day.

Percy Priest sits inside the county line about twenty minutes from downtown, with several public ramps and a long stretch of Corps shoreline that cannot be developed. Access here is better than on most southern reservoirs.

The Cumberland seen from downtown is not free-flowing river but the upper end of Cheatham Lake, a sixty-seven-mile navigation pool held back by Cheatham Lock and Dam some forty river miles below the city. Loaded tows work that channel around the clock, so the water worth fishing is everything off the marked sailing line — flats, tributary mouths and riprap, not the middle.

Couchville Lake, a hundred and ten acres inside Long Hunter State Park on the eastern shore of Percy Priest, is the practical answer for anyone fishing without a boat. Gasoline motors are not allowed on it, the loop around the shoreline is paved and near level the whole way, and there is a fishing pier at the trailhead.

The nearest grids we publish are Chicago, IL (640 km, Lake Michigan) and Charleston, SC (732 km, Charleston Harbor). Different water, and different minutes.

Winter drawdown lowers these reservoirs by several feet and exposes structure that is invisible in summer. Local anglers use the low-water months to map brush and rock they will fish when the lake refills.

Crappie spawn in March here — earlier than the Ohio valley, later than Alabama — and the shallow-water window lasts a few weeks. It is the single most crowded fishing period of the local year.

Striped bass in the Cumberland system are stocked and run large. They are the reason local anglers watch water temperature in summer more closely than they watch the calendar.

Sauger are the reason this city has no winter gap. From November into March they concentrate below Old Hickory Dam and through the upper end of Cheatham, holding in the boils and eddies of the discharge, and they are reached from the bank on both sides of the tailwater as readily as from a boat.

Skipjack herring stack in the fast water below the dams and are caught there on purpose — as bait rather than as a target. A Nashville trip for trophy striped bass or big catfish often starts with an hour of filling a livewell in the discharge.

Tackle sits outside a forecast page: start with how to catch largemouth bass.

Water temperature and season in Nashville

Air here swings 41.1 °F across the year, from 39.6 °F in January to 80.7 °F in July. No gauge measures water temperature here, so the table below is air only.

Monthly climate for Nashville, TN. The air column is the NOAA NCEI climate normal for 1991–2020 — the thirty-year average of a calendar month, not the weather of any one year — measured at NASHVILLE INTL AP, TN US (USW00013897), 9.3 km from the middle of town, with 25–27 of the thirty years behind each month. No NOAA gauge measures water temperature here, so this table is air only. Water lags air by weeks and the lag grows with depth — a deep reservoir turns later than a shallow bay — so air is never a stand-in for a thermometer in the water. Read into this site on .

April and October carry the same air normal here to within a degree — the closest pair on this site — and no two months on these reservoirs fish less alike. A reservoir is a heat store: in October it is still handing back the summer it took, in April it has taken none of it yet. Air is the reading these months agree on, and the last one to fish by.

Percy Priest holds both largemouth and smallmouth in the same water, which is uncommon. The smallmouth relate to rock and current; the largemouth to wood and cover, and they are effectively two fisheries on one lake.

Summer stratification pushes the striped bass into the deeper, cooler water near the dams and creek channels. They become a boat fishery entirely from July onward, which is not true in April.

Middle Tennessee sits where a mild winter and a hot summer meet, and the practical fishing year runs in four phases rather than two — pre-spawn, spawn, a deep and largely nocturnal summer, and a second shallow window in October and November that is consistently underfished relative to spring.

At thirty-six degrees north the daylight runs from about nine hours forty minutes at the winter solstice to about fourteen hours thirty-five minutes at the summer one — just under five hours of swing, real but nothing like the northern half of this grid. The clock catches visitors out more than the sun does: Middle Tennessee keeps Central time while Knoxville, a hundred and eighty miles east, keeps Eastern.

Middle Tennessee has two severe-weather seasons rather than one. The Nashville forecast office's tornado climatology puts the main peak in April and a secondary peak in November, when the jet stream drops back south over a Gulf still warm. Both land inside the shallow-water windows that matter most on these reservoirs, so frontal passage gets planned around as routinely as light.

License and seasons in Tennessee

Rules for Tennessee come from the Tennessee agency, and the calculation behind the table is set out in how we compute these times.

Common questions

When is the best time of day to fish in Nashville?
Take the major period closest to first or last light: 5 of 31 majors in the 16-day table overlap twilight here. Which species that hour is worth spending on changes through the year — largemouth bass peaks in April–May, October, smallmouth bass peaks in April–May, October, black crappie peaks in March–April.
Why do the windows in Nashville move so much day to day?
They follow the moon, not the clock. It crosses the meridian over Nashville, TN about 48 minutes later each day, so a dawn major is a mid-morning one within a week.
Do I need a license to fish in Nashville?
Assume yes and check first. Tennessee sets licenses, seasons and limits, and they change by year and by water. We link to the agency rather than copy it: a copied rule goes stale quietly, and the person holding the rod pays for it.
