Fishing forecast for Detroit, MI

The Detroit River is not a river in the ordinary sense — it is a strait carrying the entire flow of the upper Great Lakes from Lake St. Clair into Lake Erie. Every walleye migrating between those basins passes the city, and in April the spring run through this stretch is one of the densest concentrations of the species anywhere.

When these windows are not the right tool

Solunar theory is John Alden Knight's 1926 prediction; the ±60 and ±30 minute widths are convention, not calculation. The times are computed astronomy, the claim that fish feed inside them is not. The day rating follows moon phase — identical nationwide, so every city shows it the same. A moving front beats the moon: apps that read pressure.

Where to fish in Detroit

This page is built around Detroit River, with Lake St. Clair in reach — fresh water, about 10 minutes from the middle of Detroit.

The Detroit River connects Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie and moves an enormous volume of water. Current is constant and strong, and local technique — vertical jigging in deep fast water — exists because of it.

Michigan keeps Detroit on its own time zone identifier, America/Detroit, rather than folding it into New York. The offsets match, but the historical rules do not, and the calculations on this page use the city-specific zone.

The river is an international border, and the fishing rules change in the middle of it. A boat on the wrong side of the line is fishing under a different license and a different set of limits.

Shore access is better than a river this size usually allows. Belle Isle sits in mid-channel and has been run as a Michigan state park since 2014 under a lease from the city that still owns it, and its piers put an angler over deep moving water on foot. Downriver the mouth turns to marsh and shoal inside the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

Water level and current answer to wind on Lake Erie as much as to outflow from Lake Huron. A sustained southwest gale tips the lake toward Buffalo and drains its western basin, dropping the water at this river's mouth by feet within hours before it sloshes back. No rain is involved and nothing shows from the bank.

The nearest grids we publish are Buffalo, NY (347 km, Lake Erie) and Chicago, IL (381 km, Lake Michigan). Different water, and different minutes.

The April walleye run is the peak event of the year. Fish stage in the river to spawn, and the concentration is high enough that the fishery has a regional reputation rather than a local one.

Ice cover on Lake St. Clair is variable and the shipping channel stays open, which makes ice fishing here a genuinely dangerous local pursuit rather than a routine one. Conditions differ across a few hundred meters.

Lake St. Clair is a lake in name more than in behavior — a wide spot in a strait with strong through-flow, and its weed beds sit in moving water rather than in still.

Cutting the shipping channels stripped much of the hard bottom the river's native fish spawned on, and agencies have been putting rock back: fractured limestone reefs went in near Belle Isle in 2004 and off Fighting Island in 2008. Lake whitefish spawning in the river was documented in 2005 — the first evidence of it since 1916.

Two local names are worth knowing before reading any report from here. White bass, which run up out of Lake Erie into the lower river to spawn, are silver bass to almost everyone here. And the walleye on the Michigan bank is a pickerel on the Ontario bank a few hundred meters away — one fish, two vocabularies.

Tackle sits outside a forecast page: start with how to catch smallmouth bass.

Water temperature and season in Detroit

Air here swings 48.1 °F across the year, from 26.1 °F in January to 74.2 °F in July, and December–February average below freezing. No gauge measures water temperature here, so the table below is air only.

Monthly climate for Detroit, MI. The air column is the NOAA NCEI climate normal for 1991–2020 — the thirty-year average of a calendar month, not the weather of any one year — measured at DETROIT CITY AP, MI US (USW00014822), 9.4 km from the middle of town, with 24–27 of the thirty years behind each month. No NOAA gauge measures water temperature here, so this table is air only. Water lags air by weeks and the lag grows with depth — a deep reservoir turns later than a shallow bay — so air is never a stand-in for a thermometer in the water. Read into this site on .

Air normals describe the bank, not the strait. The water passing the city is the outflow of the upper lakes, funneled through shallow Lake St. Clair, so its temperature is delivered from upstream rather than made by a warm week over Detroit. The run in April answers to that arriving water, which is why a mild March moves the thermometer more than it moves the fishing.

Lake St. Clair upstream is shallow, weedy and one of the best muskellunge fisheries on the continent. Musky here are targeted through autumn, when the weeds die back and the fish feed hard before ice.

Yellow perch are the autumn fishery on the lake and in the river mouths, and they school tightly. Finding one perch in November usually means finding several hundred, which is not true of any other species on this list.

The lakes hold the season back at both ends: spring water stays cold into May and autumn water carries warmth into November, so the fishing calendar here runs two to three weeks behind the same latitude inland.

Detroit lies eight degrees of longitude west of the meridian the Eastern time zone is built on, so the clock runs roughly half an hour ahead of the sun. The June sun sets after nine, a quarter of an hour later than at Buffalo on the far end of the same lake; in early January sunrise holds off until past eight.

Midwinter here is just over nine hours of daylight and a river the icebreakers work all season: the Coast Guard runs Operation Coal Shovel through the St. Clair and Detroit corridor so freighters keep moving. Open, fishable current in January is the result — rare at this latitude — but the short day and the floes after a thaw set the limit.

License and seasons in Michigan

Rules for Michigan come from the Michigan agency, and the calculation behind the table is set out in how we compute these times.

Common questions

When is the best time of day to fish in Detroit?
Take the major period closest to first or last light: 4 of 31 majors in the 16-day table overlap twilight here. Which species that hour is worth spending on changes through the year — walleye peaks in April–June, smallmouth bass peaks in June–July, September, muskellunge peaks in September–November.
Why do the windows in Detroit move so much day to day?
They follow the moon, not the clock. It crosses the meridian over Detroit, MI about 48 minutes later each day, so a dawn major is a mid-morning one within a week.
Do I need a license to fish in Detroit?
Assume yes and check first. Michigan sets licenses, seasons and limits, and they change by year and by water. We link to the agency rather than copy it: a copied rule goes stale quietly, and the person holding the rod pays for it.
